I hope people who have only seen the relatively recent movie version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy get to see the extended tv version when its shown.

If i was Gary Oldman I might have hesitated at trying to step into the shoes of the sublime Alec Guinness.
Ditto Kathy Burke taking the part of Connie that Beryl Reid plays in the series.

Yes, as mentioned GBH was brilliant. But there's one thing in particular that I remember it for - the first time the word CUNT was uttered on UK tv.

It came on at 9pm on BBC2 and at 9.05 Tom Georgeson referred to someone as a cunt.
I wasn't ready for it and have to admit being quite shocked.
Made the papers the next day.

Ah yes, Pincey and Billy in Prospects, although i always thought Chrissie Cotterill who played Mona was the best character! But agree it was a great show and some lovely old street scenes from a London long gone and redeveloped.

All on youtube BTW

The Knowledge was excellent and written by Maureen Lipmans other half Jack Rosenthal who later wrote the pilot for Londons burning.

Another good London series from the 80s was Prospects.

I always thought the Knowledge was one of the best things EVER made for TV back in the late 70,s,early 80,s as well.

Nigel Hawthorne was superb in that before going on to his most famous role as Sir Humphrey in one of the all time great sitcoms, again an 80,s classic!

Yep, the pub scene was superb.

“If I was a blackbird I’d whistle and sing”

“Beam me up Scotty”

The pub scene at the end of the Yosser episode is hilarious tragic and very believable.
Shakehands puts me very much in mind of a fella in my local about 20 years back who would do pretty much the same thing he also had touretes and boxed bare knuckle back in the day.
I loved Auf Wiedershen and stuff like the Likely lads

But Britain didn't become Cool Brittannia until 97.

All of the programs below were superb. They all became massive through word of mouth, didn't really need advertising either. No constant trailers, no diversity quotas either.

I'd like to add P'tang P'tang Kipperbang as well as an odd BBC Wales film "A Pair of Shoes" (iirc) and a brilliant series "One Summer" set in Liverpool following the lives and loves of Billy and his mate Icky.

I also liked Boys from the Bush, set in Oz, with Tim Heaton from Auf Wiedersehn Pet.

"I can cook, course I can cook"

Ending up in the local chip shop half an hour later

IIRC it started off on BBC 2 and then got so popular by word of mouth that they showed it quite soon after again on BBC1?

Syd I recall Sounness left Yosser a bottle of champagne before he left and Yosser said to himself " I could have been a footballer. ........but l had a paper round". Classic!

Re: The Boys From The Blackstuff
Boys from the Blackstuff is superb TV, back when mini series could be made without having to pander to the madness and fear of offence we see in so many modern day efforts, doubt it would be made these days, well not in the way it was back in the 80,s? Not woke enough, Sexist, homophobic, demeaning to the people of Liverpool take your pick.

GBH as mentioned was another! Fantastic TV back in the day.

"Apparently this is part of BBC4's new remit of becoming an archive channel. About the only thing the BBC's good for."

That is excellent news and you're absolutely correct.

Given that we paid for all that stuff already, it should be made available on iplayer, the lot of it. That would be a much better use of the license fee.

Shank, you may have already seen it but GBH by Bleasdale is another classic. Full of brilliant performances but Robert Lyndsay & Michael Palin steal the show

Re: The Boys From The Blackstuff
A truly brilliant series from back in the day when the BBC put out some good programmes, unlike the utter dross they show today

The original 'pilot' episode before the series rarely gets shown for some reason and people who never saw the pilot will no doubt wonder why they keep referring to 'Middlesborough' in the series

In fact, I think the 'Middlesborough' episode is one of the best as it demonstrates the start of the downfall of the boys

Nagel 10:42 Thu Jul 14
Re: The Boys From The Blackstuff
Bleasdale also wrote The Monocled Mutineer, which hopefully they'll show again this year as well.

GBH was hilariously brilliant as well.
